Engage your Students this New Year with Fun January Themes such as Happy New Year, Penguins, Mittens, and Snowmen

After a nice long winter break, you would think that students would come back to us all rested, happy, alert, and ready to learn. But no, instead they come to us exhausted, tired, lazy, and not ready to work. With these January themes, you will ease them back into learning mode in no time! All of these units are in Spanish as well!

I hope everyone had a happy New Year! Happy New Year is a fun theme to start the year! In this unit you will find:

  • Several Math Activities

  • Anchor Charts

  • Writing Journal (or 2)

  • Fun Printables

  • Mini Book

  • Opposites

  • a fun crown to either get them excited by starting the week with their crown, or save it till the end of the week and have them proudly wear their crown.

After the New Year, teach about Penguins! Who doesn't love penguins? Students can learn about the life cycle of a Penguin. If you don't already own the book, Tacky the Penguin, you need to purchase it or at least check it out from the library. It is such a fun book to read aloud! Your students will love it. The Penguin unit has so many activities to choose from. In this unit you will find:

  • Several Math Activities

  • Mini Books

  • Penguin Posters

  • Anchor Charts

  • Word Wall Words

  • Writing Journal

Mittens is a popular theme for January. There are so many activities involving mittens that will get your students engaged. Students can count the mittens, skip count, make patterns, put them in order or find the missing mitten. Mittens are a great way for students to practice color recognition and cause and effect. Students can also practice sequencing and retelling. Of course, you have to read Jan Brett's The Mitten book. Students can retell the story using the characters. Send them home and have them retell the story to their loved ones. The characters come in color and in black and white. I also love the Mittens Activity Book! This mini book is so much fun. Kids love to work on it. It's great for using at arrival time, for early finishers, as a station, or just to get some peace and quiet while you work one on one with students. In this unit you will find:

  • Several Math Activities

  • Mini Books

  • Word Wall Words

  • Sequencing Activity

  • Graphic Organizers

  • Anchor Charts

  • Writing Journals

  • A Mittens Activity Book

Snowmen is another fun unit! It includes some math activities. Review or reteach Cause and Effect. Work on sequencing or make works with the Snowman Letters. There are so many Snowman activities included. In this unit you will find:

  • Several Math Activities

  • Word Wall Words

  • Anchor Charts

  • Snowman Letters

  • Mini Books

  • Writing Journals

All these themes are also available in Spanish. Check them out if you're a bilingual or dual language teacher/parent.

Happy New Year Planning,

Angie
